The Director of National Parks is a corporation solely established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, with the principal function of managing the Commonwealth reserves that are established under the Act. The Director is assisted in performing this function by the staff of Parks Australia (a division of the Department of the Environment). The Director of National Parks has delegated management of the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserves to the Australian Antarctic Division within the Department.
